About ShipIn
ShipIn Systems is redefining how the maritime industry understands, manages, and reduces operational risk. Our AI-powered visual fleet intelligence platform connects onboard video with shore-based teams, turning everyday vessel operations into actionable insight that helps prevent incidents before they escalate.
We work with many of the world’s leading shipowners and operators to bring greater visibility, accountability, and learning into daily operations at sea. The result is safer crews, stronger performance, and smarter decision-making across global fleets.
If you’re drawn to complex, real-world industries and want to build technology that changes behavior and improves safety at scale, join us.
About the Role
ShipIn's Systems Engineering team is a new function built to own the operational tooling and integrations that sit between R&D, DevOps, and Support. As our vessel deployments scale, these tools and automations can no longer live as side projects inside R&D. This role exists to change that.
You will take ownership of internal tools and platforms, inherit tool ownership from R&D developers, close automation gaps that slow teams down, and lead the implementation of our customer onboarding platform. You will also evaluate new hardware and technologies — validating them in our hardware lab and defining how they integrate with our edge servers and platform.
📣 This is not a DevOps role and not a support role. DevOps owns edge server deployment and cloud infrastructure; Support owns hardware commissioning and post-go-live care. This role owns the systems layer in between: the tools, integrations, automations, and technology decisions that make both teams more effective.
The role is 100% remote, with occasional visits to customer vessels to observe real-world deployments.
Key Responsibilities
Tool Ownership & Development
- Take ownership of internal operational tools currently maintained by R&D, and maintain, improve, and extend them as needs evolve
- Build new automation tools that reduce manual effort across teams, written in clean, production-ready Python and Bash
- Identify, evaluate, and certify new hardware (sensors, compute, cameras) in the hardware lab, then define integration requirements with the edge server and platform
- Collaborate with DevOps and Support on tooling that touches vessel hardware, camera systems, and network configuration workflows
Customer Onboarding Platform
- Drive implementation of a SaaS-based customer onboarding and success platform
- Design and build integrations between the onboarding platform and internal systems (product telemetry, CRM, support tools)
- Develop automations to reduce manual handoffs between teams and streamline onboarding workflows
Cross-Team Systems Thinking
- Work closely with R&D, DevOps, and Support to identify where tooling gaps create friction
- Translate operational pain points into well-scoped automation and integration solutions
- Ensure tools, integrations, and processes are documented so knowledge doesn't stay siloed
Requirements
- 5+ years in a systems engineering, IT engineering, or technical operations role
- Proficient in Python and Bash - able to build practical, production-ready automation tools
- Solid Linux administration (Ubuntu/Debian): service management, networking, system configuration
- Strong networking fundamentals: TCP/IP, routing, NAT, VPNs, and experience in troubleshooting constrained networks (e.g., satellite links)
- Experience with observability tooling: Prometheus, Grafana, log analysis, system-level debugging
- Comfortable inheriting and improving existing codebases, not only building from scratch
- Able to work cross-functionally and take end-to-end ownership of tools or platforms
Nice to Have
- Experience implementing or integrating SaaS onboarding or customer success platforms
- REST API development for integration and automation work
- Familiarity with camera systems or video streaming protocols (RTSP, ONVIF)
- Git-based workflows and basic CI/CD familiarity
- Background in maritime, IoT, or other hardware-heavy operational environments
